Background
Jamie* served in the United States Army for five years including multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. After his discharge from the Army, Jamie worked contract jobs overseas until returning to South Florida. Once back in Florida, Jamie began to experience severe symptoms of PTSD, which caused him to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol.
Assistance
Ultimately, he ended up in the criminal justice system and made his way into Broward’s Veteran’s Treatment Court. While in Vet Court, Legal Aid attorneys got involved with his case.
Why it Matters
With help from the attorneys at Legal Aid, Jamie enrolled in Healthcare through the VA, has recently graduated from the Court’s treatment plan, and is currently employed. Also, with the support of Legal Aid, Jamie is filing an application for expungement so that he can leave his past behind him and focus on his very bright future.
