Story of Justice: Veteran Luis, Fights for His Disability Benefits

Background
Luis* served honorably in the United States Navy from 2003 through 2005. Unfortunately, due to severe mental health issues, with time, Luis became reclusive and homeless. For about a year, he stopped attending his VA healthcare appointments and did not receive his mail. Due to these reasons, the VA terminated his service-connected disability benefits.

Assistance
Attorneys with the Mission United Veterans Pro Bono got involved with the case. With help from Project, the VA reinstated Luis’ benefits in full, increased his monthly benefit amount, and paid him retroactively for the time his benefits were terminated.

Why it Matters
Luis resumed treatment at the VA, and with help from his family, Luis found some stability in his life and a place to live. Luis has since re-enrolled in school using the GI Bill and is working toward full self-sufficiency.
