The Anthony J. Karrat Endowment

Tony Karrat’s legacy is the foundation of Legal Aid in Broward and Collier Counties. It is his life’s work. Now it is incumbent upon us, as caretakers of his efforts, to ensure that Tony’s legacy will continue for future generations by establishing the Anthony J. Karrat Endowment Fund.

The endowment will support “impact advocacy” which not only addresses an individual’s legal problems but also seeks to address the root cause of these problems. This focused advocacy can take the form of litigation, legislative and/or administrative advocacy, or negotiation.

The endowment funds will be designated to ensuring that this important and life-changing legal work can continue, as well as honoring the legacy of Tony Karrat.

Cy Pres Awards

In class action lawsuits a fund is created for payment of damages. After class members’ claims are paid, there often are residual funds remaining. Under the doctrine of Cy Pres, judges and class counsel can recommend that residual funds be awarded to fund legal service programs. GivingTuesday

Now, more than ever, LAS programs are being stretched beyond capacity. The average #GivingTuesday donation across charities nationwide last year was $140. While no gift is too small, we are calling on members of the community to “raise the bar” by encouraging a minimum donation of $150 to LAS this #GivingTuesday – November 30, 2021. Donate today!

J Lipmann

“We know that there are never going to be enough lawyers, and we do not have enough money to serve everyone with a legal issue. However, I am working hard to be one of the agents of rapid, effective, and high impact change. I have gained many personal benefits from doing pro bono work, but most importantly, doing this work reminds me why I chose to be a lawyer in the first place. The personal reward gained from donating my time and money far outweighs any amount I could ever give.”
