76-year-old Darla* is a senior who lived with her mother, who passed away in 2012. The home was titled in both Darla’s and her mother’s name. After her mother passed away, Darla was unable to receive the full homestead benefit and her property taxes increased.
Darla lives on a fixed income and was at risk of falling behind on her property taxes and losing the home in a tax deed sale. We coordinated with a pro bono attorney to help Darla with a probate case for her mother’s estate. The attorney’s work enabled Darla to get the home listed in her name only and restore the full homestead benefit, which lowered her property taxes. In addition, Darla can now prove ownership of her home in the event that she needs to apply for assistance with home repairs during hurricane season.
