Six-year old Dakota* was in jeopardy of being retained in 1st grade since the end of the first quarter grading period. Her mother contacted Legal Aid, and staff attorney Stacia McCray met with Dakota’s guidance counselor and learned that she was struggling with reading and was having trouble writing. McCray requested that interventions be put in place right away for literacy and language, and requested that an occupational and speech therapy observation be conducted. Because of these interventions and special assistance, Dakota began to make great strides with her spelling, writing, and speech. Her BAS (reading) Level improved greatly, her literacy and language competency was deemed proficient, and she met criteria for promotion to the 2nd Grade. A true success story because Dakota remains on-track for academic success!
