Pro Bono Attorney Spotlight: Dia T. Colbert, Esq.

Pro Bono Attorney Spotlight: Dia T. Colbert, Esq.

Attorney Dia T. Colbert has spent over 430 hours volunteering her legal services with Legal Aid in Broward County since June 2016. She actively contributes her time to volunteer with Legal Aid Service of Broward County and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida through the joint pro bono project, Broward Lawyers Care. Ms. Colbert has assisted 30 clients in just over 5 years. She primarily represents clients on Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases to help them obtain a fresh start. Since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, she has accepted 11 new cases and logged over 120 pro bono hours during this time.

“It’s all about helping clients not feel helpless, finding some peace in their lives again, and leaving them in a better place than when we met.” Dia T. Colbert, Esq.

Ms. Colbert didn’t take the usual route to become a lawyer. After graduating from Boston College’s School of Management, she became a paralegal, working with firms in New York and South Florida. She always had wanted to go to law school and open her own office, but work came first. So, over the course of 18 years, often taking courses at night, she earned an MBA and, finally, her J.D. in 2003, from the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law. In 2010, she became a member of the Florida Bar.  Today, her dream has come true at The Colbert Law Firm LLC in Davie.

Dia was born and raised in New York City. After attending St. Anselm’s Elementary and Cardinal Spellman High schools, she was admitted to the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in General Management in 1985. After returning to New York, Dia continued her education by obtaining her Legal Assistant Certificate from Katharine Gibbs School. In 1991, Ms. Colbert moved to South Florida, where she worked as a Civil Litigation Paralegal. In 1995, she completed her graduate studies at Barry University’s Andreas School of Business, where she received her MBA in Management. While still working as a Paralegal, Ms. Colbert attended Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law School and obtained her Juris Doctor degree.

Attorney Colbert’s principal areas of practice are bankruptcy, debt settlement, collections, contract review and litigation, and condominium association law. She is a member of the Florida Bar, American Bar Association, National Bar Association, and Broward County Bar Association. Ms. Colbert is also admitted to practice in the Southern and Middle District of Florida Bankruptcy Courts.

Ms. Colbert’s exceptional pro bono service was recognized by the Florida Bar in 2019 when she received the Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for the 17th Judicial Circuit.
