Story of Justice: Mary Gets the Support She Needs for School
Background
Mary* is in the fifth grade and has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for Specific Learning Disability (SLD). An IEP is a plan or program developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending school receives specialized instruction and related services. Nevertheless, Mary’s case still seemed to require special attention from the school.
Assistance
She had started off extremely below grade–level when Legal Aid Service of Broward County was appointed to her case. Given the situation, we requested an interim Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting to review and update her IEP. We attended the interim IEP meeting, and based on Mary’s unique education needs, we advocated for specific support and services tailored for Mary.
Why it Matters
As a result of our advocacy, Mary has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with specific and appropriate academic services. It is an honor for Legal Aid Service of Broward County to have assisted Mary in getting this tailored level of support. As a result of her new IEP, Mary is making progress with her program goals and is doing well academically.
