Stories of Justice: CCLA Against Domestic Violence

Monique* fled her home with her four children after her husband beat her severely. After accusing her of cheating on him, he slapped, punched, and kicked her while their children hid in a nearby closet. Her nine year old daughter ran to the phone and called 911.
The arrest of her husband gave Monique and CCLA time to file for an Emergency Injunction for Protection. The husband hired an attorney to fight the restraining order, but, after a full hearing, the Judge granted Monique’s Injunction for Protection. The Judge also ordered the children to reside with Monique, with supervised time-sharing for the father plus child support.
CCLA referred Monique to other community agencies for help with health insurance, counseling and food stamps, and ultimately assisted Monique with a divorce from her husband.
