Stephen B. Moss, Esq. to Receive Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award
Presented by Legal Aid Service of Broward County

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (August 16, 2016) – Russell E. Carlisle, Esq. and Anthony J. Karrat, Esq., Executive Director, Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS), announce Stephen B. Moss, Esq. has been selected to receive the 19th Annual Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award. The award will be presented at the 15th Annual For the Public Good event on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six in Fort Lauderdale.
The Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award is given annually to an advocate whose actions exemplify a personal and professional commitment to making justice available to the poor and disadvantaged.  Stephen Moss, a partner in the Fort Lauderdale office of Holland and Knight, LLP, has played an integral role in developing and growing MISSION UNITED, a United Way initiative aimed at re-acclimating Broward County veterans to civilian life. The project, started in Broward County in collaboration with LAS, has been adopted in other communities across the United States and will continue to impact the lives of Veterans nationwide for years to come.
Mr. Moss began the practice of law in 1971 following two years of active military service in the United States Army, including one year in Vietnam. He practices in the areas of real property law, including development, insurance and business law. Moss is a former member of the LAS Board of Directors
“One of the greatest feelings in life is when we help others. Lawyers have the unique opportunity to help others who cannot afford legal representation. I encourage all lawyers to represent at least one pro bono client each year. Imagine all the lives that will be enhanced – a senior citizen with a special need; a child who needs representation in a dependency case; a veteran who needs assistance navigating benefits from the VA,” says Moss, adding, “Imagine all the lawyers whose lives will be enriched by helping others in this very special way.”
Past recipients of the Award include: Bruce Rogow, Esq. – 1999, Don A. Wich, Jr., Esq. – 2000, the late Henry Latimer, Esq. – 2001, Sharon Bourassa, Esq. – 2002, Jerome Ira Solkoff, Esq. – 2003, Howard Talenfeld, Esq. – 2004, Nancy W. Gregoire, Esq. – 2005, Levi G. Williams, Esq. – 2006, Terrence Russell, Esq. – 2007, Andrea L. Moore, Esq. – 2008, Adele I. Stone, Esq. – 2009, Belinda Keiser – 2010, Walter Honaman, Esq. – 2011, Roy Rogers – 2012, The Honorable Arthur J. England, Jr. – 2013, The Honorable Mel Grossman – 2014 and Jane Curran – 2015.
The annual fundraiser will honor members of the community who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to secure justice and change lives for the underprivileged and underserved in Broward County. An estimated 450 Broward County lawyers, judges and community leaders are expected to be in attendance, for what is widely-noted throughout Broward as the premier pro-bono recognition event of the year.
Proceeds from the event benefit children and families served by LAS and CCLA and enable both organizations to serve greater numbers of those in need.  A few of the many legal services provided include helping seniors and veterans gain much needed benefits, abused children in foster care, the homeless, children in need of special education, victims of domestic violence and families losing their homes to foreclosure. Annual sponsors of LAS and CCLA include Valley National Bank; US Legal Support; Kim Vaughan Lerner, LLP; Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman, PL; and CopyScan Technologies.
