PLANTATION, Fla. – July 17, 2018 – Legal Aid Service of Broward County Attorney Komal S. Mirza has been named a Fellow for The Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Leadership Academy of the Florida Bar, Class VI. She is one of 30 Fellows chosen from a pool of 116 statewide applicants.
The Academy was founded in 2012 by then Florida Bar President Eugene Pettis to enhance the skills of a diverse and inclusive group of lawyers selected from across the state and to enable them to become effective leaders throughout the Bar, the legal profession and the greater community. The selection process is highly competitive with an expansive application including three essays and a minimum of two letters of recommendation. Successful applicants have proven a strong propensity to lead through a combined demonstration of their leadership experience and their adeptness in tackling the challenges faced by the legal profession today.
Mirza brings a history of public service and leadership to the position. In addition to providing legal representation for children in foster care at Legal Aid, she volunteers with various community organizations and initiatives. She serves as a Member of the Board of Directors for the Broward County Women Lawyers’ Association and is the Founding Chair of its award-winning School Board Committee. Mirza is also a mentor to undergraduate students at her alma mater Florida Atlantic University, where she assists with planning and the transition to a career or graduate school.
”It is my strong belief that each individual has a responsibility to work with others to leave a lasting and positive impact on every facet of our community, while empowering others to do the same,” said Mirza.
Mirza looks forward to joining the rank of Fellows of The Florida Bar Leadership Academy. The fellowship is a one-year term from June 2018 to June 2019.
