Young Lawyers Section of the Broward County Bar Association to Receive Spirit of Justice Award at 14th Annual For the Public Good

Young Lawyers Section of the Broward County Bar Association
to Receive Spirit of Justice Award at 14th Annual For the Public Good

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (June 30, 2015) – Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) announce that the Young Lawyers Section of the Broward County Bar Association has been selected to receive the Spirit of Justice Award at the 14th Annual For the Public Good. The event will be held Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six in Fort Lauderdale.

The Young Lawyers Section (YLS) has provided a shining example of how a group of people can pull together to make an impact in our community. Members of the YLS have donated countless hours to the Broward Lawyers Care Advice and Counsel Hotline at LAS. For the past two years they have challenged other volunteer bar associations to do the same. YLS has supported CCLA and LAS in other ways as well, making financial contributions, including sponsoring a summer fellow through NEXT, the young leadership group that supports CCLA and LAS. The enthusiasm and drive to put Broward County at top with regard to fulfilling pro bono obligations and support is inspiring.  These young attorneys and the work they do will have a lasting impact for years to come.

The Spirit of Justice Award was created in 2014 to recognize those who embody the “spirit” of the work done by CCLA and LAS and to commemorate the 40th and 10th anniversaries of each respectively. Bernard Appleman, Esq. was the first recipient.

The annual fundraiser will celebrate the magic of pro bono giving and honor members of the community who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to secure justice and change lives for the underprivileged and underserved in Broward County. An estimated 450 Broward County lawyers, judges and community leaders are expected to be in attendance, for what is widely-noted throughout Broward as the premier pro-bono recognition event of the year.

Proceeds from the event benefit children and families served by LAS and CCLA and enable both organizations to serve greater numbers of those in need.  A few of the many legal services provided include helping veterans gain much needed benefits, abused children in foster care, the homeless, children in need of special education, victims of domestic violence and families losing their homes to foreclosure.
