John* is a senior citizen living alone in a home titled in the estate of his deceased mother. His only income is Social Security and he intends to stay in the home permanently. When John reported his mother’s death to the property appraiser, they removed the homestead exemption, causing a large increase in his property taxes. Through the No Place Like Home program at Broward Lawyers Care, a pro bono attorney helped John complete a probate case for his mother’s estate. The court awarded him the title of the home, enabling him to reinstate the homestead exemption and reduce his property taxes. The attorney’s work also enables him to obtain disaster relief assistance in the event of a hurricane. John is grateful and agrees that there is no place like home!
