Pro Bono Attorney Spotlight: Scott Owens

Scott Owens is with the law firm of Scott D. Owens, P.A., a consumer law practice in Hollywood, Florida. As one of Florida’s most recognized consumer advocates, Scott represents consumers with regard to violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), violations of the Florida Consumer Collection Practices Act (FCCPA), violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), and violations of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA). Scott has certified more than 20 class actions since becoming a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) in 2007, including several multi-million-dollar class action settlements in 2015. His class action settlements have benefited cy pres recipients to the tune of several hundred thousand dollars, including CCLA and LAS.
Scott serves as a valued mentor to our consumer law attorneys and generously lends his time and expertise. He has co-counselled numerous consumer law cases for years, coaching and mentoring CCLA and LAS attorneys and serving as a valuable resource. He also has taken six pro bono cases, including mortgage foreclosure, wage garnishment, creditor harassment/collection practices among others. Most recently, Scott conducted a training for legal aid attorneys on new areas of concern in Consumer Law.
“As an attorney whose practice is devoted to consumer protection, I am thankful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and provide pro bono legal assistance to others,” Scott said. “I believe that the more privileged among us have a professional and moral duty to assist the less fortunate, the downtrodden, and those who are generally underrepresented in our society.  Unless we strive toward this goal, there will never be justice for all – only the few.”
In 2016, Owens received the Spirit of Justice Award presented by CCLA and LAS. His commitment to ensuring access to justice has not wavered since then. We thank him for his continued contributions to our community.
