Lorrie Schwartz To Receive Jacquelyn and Bruce Rogow Employee of the Year Award at 15th Annual For the Public Good

Lorrie Schwartz To Receive
Jacquelyn and Bruce Rogow Employee of the Year Award
at 15th Annual For the Public Good

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (July 25, 2016) – Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) announce that Lorrie Schwartz has been selected to receive the Jacquelyn and Bruce Rogow Employee of the Year Award. The Award will be presented at the 15th Annual For the Public Good on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six in Fort Lauderdale.
Lorrie Schwartz is a Housing Unit Paralegal who has worked at LAS since 1978.  Tony Karrat, Executive Director of LAS, stated:  “I am pleased that Lorrie was selected to receive this Award. Lorrie is the go-to person on our team for in-depth knowledge about federally subsidized housing programs. She has been a dedicated and compassionate advocate during the past thirty-eight years for clients facing a loss of housing and the threat of homelessness.” In her role at LAS, Schwartz ensures that federal housing laws are followed so that public housing tenants and their families are treated fairly and are protected from poor living conditions and wrongful terminations.
The Rogows have both been long-time supporters of legal aid programs. Jacqueline Rogow, Esq. worked for LAS from 1978-80, while Bruce Rogow, Esq. once worked for Legal Services of Greater Miami and served as Chairperson of Legal Aid Service of Broward County in 1983. A noted champion of civil rights and a highly esteemed law professor at Nova’s Shepard Broad Law Center, over the last 40 years he has grown to greatly value the importance of the role all staff play in advancing the missions of Legal Aid and Coast to Coast. It is in this light that the Rogows have established the Jacquelyn and Bruce Rogow Employee of the Year Award, a $1,000 meritorious award to be given annually to an employee from one of the two legal aid organizations in Broward.
The annual fundraiser will honor members of the community who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to secure justice and change lives for the underprivileged and underserved in Broward County. An estimated 450 Broward County lawyers, judges and community leaders are expected to be in attendance, for what is widely-noted throughout Broward as the premier pro-bono recognition event of the year.
Proceeds from the event benefit children and families served by LAS and CCLA and enable both organizations to serve greater numbers of those in need.  A few of the many legal services provided include helping seniors and veterans gain much needed benefits, abused children in foster care, the homeless, children in need of special education, victims of domestic violence and families losing their homes to foreclosure. Annual sponsors of LAS and CCLA include Valley National Bank; US Legal Support; Kim Vaughan Lerner, LLP; Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman, PL; and CopyScan Technologies.
