In-House Employment/HR Lawyer

LASBC is seeking a dedicated In-House Employment/HR Lawyer to provide legal counsel on all employment matters within our organization. The responsibilities include advising on employment law, overseeing employee disputes and making recommendations for resolution processes, and ensuring our business practices comply with all applicable regulations and laws. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in employment law, excellent negotiation skills, and must have the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and legal counsel to management on employment laws, regulations, and best practices
  • Review, draft, and revise company policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Make recommendations to Executive Team and coordinate with outside counsel in any employment litigation matters
  • Navigate and make recommendations to Executive Team as to resolution of employee disputes and complaints
  • Assist in negotiating and drafting employment contracts, severance agreements, and other employment-related documents
  • Advise Executive Team on disciplinary matters, terminations, and other sensitive employment issues
  • Conduct training sessions for HR, management, and employees on employment laws and policies
  • Stay current on changes to employment laws and regulations and inform the necessary parties of any changes that could impact the business
    • Work closely with HR and management to strategically plan for potential legal impacts of proposed business changes 
    • Update and maintain employee manual as needed

 Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and Florida Bar License
  • Five to ten years proven experience as an Employment Lawyer, preferably for a corporation or business
  • Extensive knowledge of employment laws and legal procedures
  • Experience in employee complaints/disputes and dispute resolution and litigation processes
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to interpret and explain legal language
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret laws and regulations, and provide practical legal advice to the company
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate complex legal concepts to non-legal colleagues, negotiate contracts, and represent the company in any disputes or legal proceedings
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple matters simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
  • Attention to detail to ensure all legal documents, contracts, and advice are accurate and compliant with the law
  • Interpersonal skills to build relationships with internal stakeholders, external counsels, and regulatory bodies

Position Description

The LASBC LIFT Project provides advice, counsel, and representation in civil legal matters which prevent domestic violence victims from reaching financial stability, such as landlord/tenant, consumer, family law, and public benefits.  The Project Attorney and paralegal team work on-site at the Women In Distress domestic violence shelter three days per week and two days per week in the Legal Aid office.

The Staff Attorney is responsible for all tasks delineated above and any other tasks as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Active membership in the Florida State Bar;
  • Experience serving low-income individuals;
  • A demonstrable awareness and sensitivity to the needs of the populations we serve;
  • Experience in landlord/tenant, consumer, family law, public benefits;
  • A willingness to be an aggressive advocate for our client population;
  • Ability to work effectively with a large caseload and function professionally within a highly stressful environment;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Ability to work independently at times and also as an effective part of a team, including other attorneys, support staff, volunteers, and community partners;
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills;
  • Ability to work constructively with others;
  • Ability to speak more than one language is a plus.

Position Description

The Children’s Advocacy Program (CAP) of Legal Aid Service of Broward has openings for full time children’s attorneys to provide direct, independent legal representation of children and youth in the child welfare system.  Attorneys will be responsible for carrying a full case load which includes meeting with and counseling child and youth clients to determine the course of legal advocacy; frequent court advocacy at all types of dependency proceedings from status hearings to motion hearings to trials; participating in mediations, negotiations, and treatment team staffings; and legal research and drafting of pleadings.  Attorneys may also advocate for child victims of crime, including human trafficking, and engage in system advocacy to improve child welfare and the dependency system.  Attorneys may also assist youth clients navigating the juvenile delinquency system.   

Qualifications 

  • Member in good standing of the Florida Bar.
  • Background or experience in child dependency law, children’s law, or related areas is preferred.
  • Courtroom litigation experience preferred.
  • Commitment to improving the lives of children and families involved in the child welfare system.
  • Willingness to work with, advocate for, and support children who have experienced trauma.
  • Willingness to be empathetic with children and youth who manifest trauma in unhealthy or maladaptive behaviors.
  • Value team collaborative efforts.
  • Willingness to be a strong advocate for children and youth clients.
  • Capability for travel within Broward County.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, Haitian Kreyol, or Portuguese preferred.

LEGAL ASSISTANT- HOMELESS PREVENTION

Position Description:

LASBC has an immediate opening for two paralegals. The Paralegal is under the direct supervision of the unit Supervising Attorney and the other unit attorneys. The paralegal assists the attorneys and takes primary responsibility for creating and maintaining case files. Candidate should be capable of acting with a substantial degree of independence and responsibility in this professional capacity.

Illustrative Tasks:

The specific duties of a paralegal shall include the following:

  • Make calls to clients, the County, opposite party
  • Respond to queries regarding the program and references
  • Schedule appointments
  • Review Court Dockets on current cases
  • Conduct background searches and eviction history
  • Conduct research on rental property, ownership of landlord
  • Conducts Intake Interviews;
  • Gather information pertinent to client case including tax returns, pay stubs, Statements of benefits such as Social Security benefit, SNAP benefits and so on that impacts the finances of the home; update the file accordingly.
  • Prepare a basic budget of expenses
  • Prepare Intake summary for files
  • Prepare correspondence;
  • Draft legal documents;
  • Deliver and file documents as needed;

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform legal research;
  • Ability to interview clients and document information;
  • Proficient writing and communication skills;
  • Ability to prioritize work activities;
  • Basic computer skills;

CONTROLLER

Responsible for assisting the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with all strategic and operational financial management, including budget oversight, fiscal and grant compliance, cost-benefit analysis, and forecasting. Recommending and implementing high-level system improvements as needed. Provides financial insights and guidance to the CFO and Management team, addressing critical financial and budgeting issues.

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversees financial and operational strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  2. Assists with the month-end close process, including preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals.
  3. Assists the CFO with the monthly financial reporting for the Board.
  4. Maintains and reconciles general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
  5. Assists to ensure ongoing alignment between financial, operational, and programmatic objectives. 
  6. Provides regular reports, and keeps the CFO informed of LAS’s finances and the operation and progress of compliance efforts. 
  7. Assists the CFO in setting up the annual budget and monitoring its implementation.
  8. Assists the CFO in developing grant budgets for applications.
  9. Responsible for the overall operation of LAS accounting, financial, and grant systems.
  10. Oversees budgeting, budget implementation, tracking, and reconciliation to monitor progress and present status reports and narratives including financial metrics both internally and externally. 
  11. Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory requirements, and audit requirements. Maintains internal control safeguards and coordinates all audit activities.
  12. Understands and monitors adherence to accounting rules and regulations including rules for grants.
  13. Manages cash flow and forecasting to ensure financial stability and sustainability.
  14. Assists with annual audit process and resolves queries of statutory auditors.
  15. Mentors and develops the fiscal and compliance team, managing work allocation, training, performance evaluation, and fostering a dynamic team environment.
  16. Collaborates with the Management Team and program staff to ensure alignment between financial, operational, and programmatic objectives.
  17. Performs all other duties as assigned and/or requested by Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer, Supervisors, or as required by grant(s).
  18. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.

B. QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance required and MBA preferred.
  2. At least 10 years’ experience managing finance preferred (accounting, budgeting, control and reporting) and compliance functions within a diverse division-based entity.
  3. Hands-on and fully engaged, and able to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment. 
  4. Excellent and clear written and oral communicator;
  5. Strong analytical skills.
  6. Integrity.
  7. Deep understanding of and experience with financial statements.
  8. Thorough understanding of cost accounting, indirect allocation methods, and best practices to ensure proper contract costing.
  9. Ability to communicate complex and nuanced financial information to non-financial professionals. 
  10. Commitment to the organization’s mission and social justice.
  11. Exceptional organization skills.

Salary and Benefits

This full-time position is competitive and commensurate with experience ranging from $110,000-$125,000.  LASBC offers a generous benefits package that includes health, vision, dental, and life insurance (for the employee), 5% retirement match, 13 paid holidays, and generous annual and sick leave allotments starting at 15 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per year—good work-life balance.
