Stories of Justice: Jackson

Jackson* is a student with special needs who receives services through an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Jackson’s levels of performance indicated that he needed Extended School Year (ESY) services through the summer to prevent regression. The school denied eligibility for ESY despite Jackson’s needs, stating that only students with a specific type of disability were eligible for ESY, which is contrary to federal law.
An attorney from the Education Legal Rights Project (ELRP) immediately requested and attended a meeting with the school to discuss ESY. As a result of the ELRP attorney’s advocacy at the meeting, Jackson was made eligible for ESY and will continue to receive the necessary services through the summer.
