Story of Justice: Charlie Works Out a Parenting Plan

Charlie Works Out a Parenting Plan

Charlie*, a veteran, and his wife separated several years ago. Charlie remained in Broward County, and his wife and daughter moved to California. For years, Charlie had only spoken to his daughter over the phone as he could not afford to travel. During one of these calls, Charlie discovered that his now teenage daughter was moving to Central America to live with her maternal grandparents.

Afraid that he would never see his daughter again, Charlie came to Legal Aid seeking assistance. The Mission United Veterans Pro Bono Project helped Charlie, his ex-wife, and daughter work out a long-term plan through Legal Aid’s Collaborative Divorce Project.

Why it Matters

The Veteran and his wife both received pro bono attorneys. The attorneys worked together with a neutral mental health professional and a financial advisor to develop a parenting plan and timesharing agreement that was positive for the family. The plan allowed Charlie to have in-person visitation with his daughter and improved notably the communication between family members.
