Stories of Justice: CCLA First Same-Sex, Transgender, Divorce

Liz* came to Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) for an Injunction for Protection (restraining order) against her wife, citing written proof of physical abuse. The two were married in a state that recognized same-sex marriage, which at the time was not legal in Florida. After much consideration, the court granted a Final Judgment of Injunction for Protection until further order.

In the interim, Liz began the transition process to become a male. When Florida recognized same-sex marriage, Liz’s wife filed for a divorce. We handled our first same-sex, transgender divorce and settled the remaining financial issues at mediation. During the pendency of the divorce, we assisted Liz (now Larry*) with a Petition for a Name Change and were able to finalize the divorce under his new name!
