FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (July 7, 2015) – Russell E. Carlisle, Esq. and Anthony J. Karrat, Esq., Executive Director, Legal Aid Service of Broward County, announce Jane E. Curran, Executive Director Emeritus of The Florida Bar Foundation, has been selected to receive the 18th annual Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award. The award will be presented at the 14th Annual For the Public Good event on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six in Fort Lauderdale.
The Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award is given annually to an advocate whose actions exemplify a personal and professional commitment to making justice available to the poor and disadvantaged. Through her 33 years with The Florida Bar Foundation, Jane Curran’s extraordinary vision and leadership have impacted legal service providers throughout the state. Among other things, she made immeasurable contributions to the national Interest on Legal Trust Accounts (IOLTA) movement, which changed how legal service providers are funded. Curran has tirelessly promoted access to justice statewide and nationally, as promised by our Constitution, having a life-changing positive impact on the poor throughout our country.
Past recipients of the Award, who traditionally convene to choose the new recipients, are:
Bruce Rogow, Esq. – 1999, Don A. Wich, Jr., Esq. – 2000, the late Henry Latimer, Esq. – 2001, Sharon Bourassa, Esq. – 2002, Jerome Ira Solkoff, Esq. – 2003, Howard Talenfeld, Esq. – 2004, Nancy W. The annual fundraiser will celebrate the magic of pro bono giving and honor members of the community who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to secure justice and change lives for the underprivileged and underserved in Broward County. An estimated 450 Broward County lawyers, judges and community leaders are expected to be in attendance, for what is widely-noted throughout Broward as the premier pro-bono recognition event of the year.
Proceeds from the event benefit children and families served by LAS and CCLA and enable both organizations to serve greater numbers of those in need. A few of the many legal services provided include helping veterans gain much needed benefits, abused children in foster care, the homeless, children in need of special education, victims of domestic violence and families losing their homes to foreclosure.
